Hey Winnipeg! The August long weekend is here! What are your plans?

Let’s start at Silver City Polo Park Saturday afternoon over the lunch hour. They will be screening the 10th Anniversary of Andre Rieu’s traditional summer evening concerts, staged on the most romantic city square in The Netherlands—the Vrijthof in Maastricht. One of the most popular live acts in the world, the King of Waltz will be works his magic to present a concert full of humour, music and emotion for every age. –complete with his famous 60 piece Johann Strauss Orchestra, along with many famous guest artists, soloists, light shows and spectacular fireworks. Showtime is at 12:30 Saturday at Silver City Polo Park Saturday afternoon. (There will be encore performances Aug 6 & 17)

Saturday night over at Assiniboine Park, Movies in the Park kicks off. As always, there are two features you can take in. At 7:00 PM the night starts off with the Academy Award nominated Dream Works animation The Croods. Featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds and Cloris Leachman, the film is about a cave family forced to trek through an unfamiliar fantastical world after their cave is destroyed.

Then at 9:15 PM, it’s Divergent. Based on the best-selling book series by Veronica Roth, Divergent is an action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues.

So grab a blanket and some popcorn head down for some great free entertainment!

I also want to mention a wonderful Japanese film screening at the Cinematheque tonight as well. It’s called Like Father, Like Son. A Jury prize Winner at Cannes, this film tells the very moving story of Ryota and his wife who one day get a phone call from the hospital. Their 6-year-old son, Keita, is not their son---the hospital gave them the wrong baby. Ryota is foced to make the life-changing decision, to choose between nature and nurture. The Japanese film with English subtitles screens Saturday night at 7:00 PM at the Cinematheque in the Exchange District and then again next Thursday at 7:00 PM.

Sunday, Assiniboine Park continues to be your number one destination for smooth jazz.

At the Leo Mol Sculptre Garden it’s multi-talented Jazz musician Dave Lawton. Escape the noise and heat of the concrete jungle and enjoy some great jazz amid blooming flowers, flowing fountains and beautiful works of art. Showtime is 3:00 PM and it is absolutely free.

Later on in the evening it’s Sunday Night Smooth Jazz at the Lyric with New York City trumpet player Cindy Bradley. The jazz musician loves to tell the story of how she became a trumpet player by accident in fourth grade. Cindy says she started playing the piano when she was six, but she had to choose a different instrument to be part of the band program. Cindy forgot to bring her permission slip to class, so the teacher just had her to randomly circle an instrument that she wanted to play. Cindy picked the trumpet, which turned out to be a life and career defining fluke.

Showtime is 7:00 PM at the Lyric in Assiniboine Park. It’s free and the host of the evening’s activities is your very own Classic 107 host Roxane Gagne.

And finally, Sunday also marks the kick off to the largest and longest running multicultural festival of its kind in the world. I’m talking about – Foklorama. In its 45th year, this year’s festival will feature 43 pavilions celebrating the incredible cultural diversity that exists in Manitoba.

Those are just some of the things happening in this beautiful city of ours this weekend.
