FortWhyte Alive is now home to the biggest solar panel installation in Winnipeg.

The 60 kilowatt, 167 panel installation was constructed over six days, finishing yesterday. Bullfrog Power, Investors Group, and Manitoba Hydro's solar energy program contributed funds to the $180,000 project.

FortWhyte Alive director of operations Ian Barnett calls it a great opportunity for them to educate about renewable energy.

"It's location is so prominent. There's going to be 110,000 visitors per year passing by it, craning their necks, and you know, 30,000 school children every year."

The solar panels will offset 50 per cent of the energy consumption at the FortWhyte Farms, and they are expected to save FortWhyte Alive $350,000 in energy costs over the panels' 30-year lifespan.
