The Winnipeg Humane Society has kicked off a program intended to connect new adopters and their pets to veterinary clinics.

Through the Welcome Home program, which started this week, adopters can get one free physical check-up for their pet if they visit a participating vet clinic within the first four weeks of adoption.

WHS communications coordinator Kyle Jahns says they've currently got 22 participating vet clinics and they're hoping that number grows. He says adopters will be given a map of where these participating vets are, and the adopter can choose where they'd like to go.

Jahns says you wouldn’t go your entire life without visiting a medical professional and neither should your pet. He says they want to be able to make sure pets get an initial introduction to a vet when they're adopted.

The Welcome Home program is based off of a model used in Portland.
