Most of Manitoba will see a short reprieve from the intense cold weather over the next 24 hours, along with a blanket of snow.

"The prairies are under the influence of a ridge of high pressure, being the cold air we've been under for the last while," says Meteorologist Natalie Hasell from Environment Canada. "Right now we have extreme cold warnings out for most parts of the province."

The Interlake and regions east and west of it are also under a snowfall warning for Friday.

"We expect to see the passage of a low-pressure system. Temperatures are actually going to be rising tonight and then as the low passes, temperatures are going to fall right back down tomorrow during the day."

The low-pressure system could bring 10-15 cm of snow over most of the bottom half of the province, including Winnipeg.

"We're expecting the snow to begin late this afternoon and end in the morning tomorrow," says Hasell.

Driving conditions could also be affected as it snows and the wind blows it around.

"If staying home is an option, it may be the best one. If you do have to travel, have an emergency kit. Pay attention to road conditions and drive to those conditions. If you are stuck on the highway and you're in your car, stay in your car because it's already offering you shelter."

Hasell says the extreme cold warning will stick around until early next week when temperatures should return to normal winter highs and lows.
