The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg is hosting a special day for caregivers.

In response to a growing number of people feeling overwhelmed in that role, the YMAC-YWCA Mental Health Team is inviting Winnipeggers to attend a free Caregiver's Wellness Day

“Quite often, we know that we need to care for ourselves,” said Rebecca Trudeau YWinnipeg’s Manager of Mental Health Programs. “We know the benefits of self-care and we know what to do, however, we all face challenges in making it a priority.”

The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg says statistics show there is an increasing number of people providing care or help to someone with a long-term health condition, physical or mental disability, or challenges relating to aging.

The hope is that this event will help remind caregivers to also take care of themselves.

“We want to ensure we provide a structured opportunity where care is guided, leaving no worry about what you should or shouldn’t be doing, said Trudeau. “Our goal is to provide caregivers with the tools they need to put their own personal wellness at the forefront.”

The one-day event will include education on care for the caregiver and compassion fatigue. The Y's Mental Health Services Team will also be on hand to provide participants with activities throughout the day, including therapeutic art, mindfulness practice, non-violent boxing for stress release, self-reflection and group discussion.

Participants will also have access to the track, fitness equipment, group exercise classes, pool and steam room.

The free Caregiver's Wellness Day will take place on Friday, Feb. 2 at the Downtown Y.
