Winnipeg is a windy city and once again, The Forks is embracing it and harnessing the beauty brought on by the wind.

For the second year in a row, The Forks is excited to welcome The Forks Windsock Exposition 2022. Nine local artists, architects, and organizations have created their interpretation of the windsock, which can be found along the Nestaweya River Trail presented by The Winnipeg Foundation.

“Instead of fighting the wind, we’re harnessing its power and showcasing art installations that have been designed to use this natural source,” says Sara Stasiuk, Chief Executive Officer, The Forks North Portage. “Thanks to the creativity of our partners, the Nestaweya River Trail presented by The Winnipeg Foundation is covered in these incredible public art installations that add colour, movement, and whimsy to the landscape.”

While traditionally a windsock is a conical textile tube used as a basic guide to wind direction and speed, the windsocks provided by our partners are anything but a basic sock.

Utilizing materials that include paddles, tulle, cowrie shells, and more, each windsock is incredibly unique and is a must-see in person! The Forks Windsock Explosion 2022 installations can be found along the 6 km Nestaweya River Trail presented by The Winnipeg Foundation where they will remain for the season, adding public art to one of Winnipeg’s favourite winter experiences. All contributors received an honorarium for their time and materials.
