"Proud Winnipegger" Desiree Scott is joining her soccer team in victory abroad while her hometown celebrates her gold medal.

Canada's women's soccer team won their match against Sweden Friday morning. After a sudden death, Canada emerged victoriously with a score of 1:1(3:2). Screams of joy were heard after Julia Grosso scored their final goal in the shootout.

Congratulations are pouring in for the 34-year-old, including from Winnipeg's mayor.

"Congratulations to Canada’s Women’s National Soccer Team on being Gold Medal Olympic Champions! Thanks to @MsDScott11 & Team Canada for making Winnipeg proud. In your honour the Winnipeg sign will be lit GOLD tonight to celebrate your historic win!," Mayor Bowman announces.

The University of Manitoba alumni is receiving praise from her alma mater.

We are truly so proud of you," current UM President and Vice-Chancellor Michael Benarroch says in a statement.

"Thanks Desi for being who you are and for representing our country, our province, and city with so much pride. We love you!" current head coach Vanessa Martinez-Lagunas says in the same statement.

Scott has been in two previous Olympics, in 2012 and 2016 where she won bronze at both.
