Events for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Winnipeg

Saturday, Sep. 30, is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. There are several events taking place throughout Winnipeg to mark the day. The largest event is the 'Orange Shirt Day Survivors Walk and Pow Wow,' organized by the Wa-Say Healing Centre. It will begin at the Oodena Circle at the Forks at 11 a.m., with people walking to the Canada Life Centre. The Grand Entry will take place at Canada Life Centre at 1 p.m., and the event will feature special guest speakers and musicians. Organizers are asking those who would like to attend to register ahead of time. St. John's Park (1201 Main St.) will host 'Day of Reflection Sacred Fire and Gathering.' There will be drumming, singing, tipi teachings, and round dancing, among other activities. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Children's Museum (45 Forks Market Rd.) will also play host to a number of activities. Admission will be free up to a maximum capacity of 600 people, and special programming will run between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. There will be a Métis Paper Vest workshop facilitated by the Louis Riel Institute and programming provided by Elder Barb Nepinak. Create a take-home decorative heart for a Heart Garden, with each heart representing the memory of a child lost to the residential school system. Our teepee will be on display for special story times at 12:00PM and 2:00PM and bannock will be served while supplies last.
