One of life’s simple pleasures is sitting on a patio, feeling the sun shining while sipping on a crisp, cool beverage.

Add to that live music and you’re in for a real treat.

The folks over at Flipside Opera and Art Song Collective have embraced that winning combination with their seasonal hit, “Opera by the Pint” at Little Brown Jug Brewing Co.

Back for its seventh season, the evening turns the brew hall into a concert hall with unrehearsed performances by emerging and established singing talents.

“If anything, I think it’s growing,” says Flipside’s General Manager Lisa Rumpel about the series. “More and more people are finding out about it.”

Whether it’s unsuspecting patrons who are "spooked by a bunch of opera singers” or opera lovers who are keen to experience outstanding singing in new ways, the event has resonated with a wide variety of audiences.

“I think one of the other things that makes it interesting for audiences... is that they’re so up-close and personal,” says artistic director Judith Oatway. “Something that you don’t get to see when you’re watching a show at the Concert Hall. You don’t see that singer breathing or sweating or whatever.”

The repertoire is varied, with Baroque, bel canto, contemporary, musical theatre and more being shared on the patio outside – or indoors in the brewery, if the weather isn’t cooperating.

“Opera by the Pint” is free, with a “pass the pitcher” component going towards the performing artists.

“It’s allowing us to keep it going,” says Oatway.

The next event takes place on Wednesday, June 19 beginning at 7 p.m.
